Setting sail on your very first cruise feels a bit like stepping into another world. There’s the excitement, the butterflies, the slight panic about whether you’ve packed enough, and the endless questions that suddenly pop into your mind. I still remember my first cruise so clearly, I had no idea what I was doing! So if you're here to get some tips and prepare, you’re already off to a great start. Let me walk you through some simple, first-time cruise advice that will make everything feel easier from the moment you step onboard.
Cruising is an amazing way to travel. It’s relaxing, it’s fun, it’s full of new experiences, but it also has its own little quirks that first timers don’t always expect. So grab a brew and let’s go through the essentials that will help you feel like a seasoned cruiser before you even see the ship.
Before you board: a few things to get right early
Choosing the right cruise makes a huge difference to your holiday, so don’t rush this part.
Pick the itinerary that actually excites you. Mediterranean beaches? Caribbean sunshine? Norwegian fjords? Every itinerary comes with its own vibe. What's yours?
Consider the ship’s size and style. Bigger ships are packed with restaurants, bars and entertainment. Smaller ships feel calmer and more intimate.
Choose your cabin wisely. Inside cabins are great value but have no natural light. Ocean view or balcony cabins cost a bit more but the views and fresh air can be worth every penny.
And yes, booking early really does help. Better prices, better cabin selection, fewer compromises. Also take a moment to check what’s included in your fare, because some lines bundle drinks, Wi-Fi or gratuities, while others charge separately. Also keep an eye out for cabin upgrade schemes, you might bag yourself a better cabin at a bargain price! Find out all about them in my upgrade guide.
Packing for your first cruise
Packing for a cruise is its own kind of challenge. You want variety, but you also don’t want to haul around a suitcase that threatens to pop every time you sit on it to close it. Trust me, I've been there...
A few tips you’ll be grateful for:
Layering is your friend. Even warm destinations can feel breezy at sea.
Bring something smart for formal or dress up nights. You don’t need to go full red carpet unless you want to, but a bit of effort goes a long way!
Comfortable shoes are essential. You’ll be walking miles without even realising it, it's why nothing you eat on a cruise counts!
Don’t forget the basics: sun cream (or sunscreen if you're American!), a reusable water bottle, medications and consider seasickness tablets if you’re unsure how you'll feel.
Chargers and adapters always disappear when you need them. Bring a multi‑charger so you’re not fighting with one plug. You'll thank me later.
A small day bag for ports is a lifesaver too. Camera, wallet, water, sun cream. Done.
The best first-time cruise advice I can give new cruisers
Don’t overbook yourself. Seriously. I know the temptation is huge. There’s so much to do onboard and so many amazing things to see in port, but you’re allowed to enjoy slow moments too.
Prioritise what you’re genuinely excited about and give yourself time to relax. Some of the best cruise moments are the ones you don’t plan: a drink at sunset, a quiet morning on deck, or wandering into an activity you didn’t even know existed. You can always book another cruise and come back to the places you enjoyed the most.
And talk to people. Crew members and fellow cruisers are can give you some incredible advice..
Onboard tips: how to cruise like you’ve done it before
Once you’re onboard, take a little time to get familiar with the ship.
Check the daily newsletter or app every evening so you don’t miss something brilliant the next day. Perfect to read in bed.
Try different dining options. The main dining room is lovely, but so are the casual spots and speciality restaurants.
Stay hydrated and pace yourself. You’re on holiday, not running a marathon.
Explore the ship. Some of the best viewpoints and quiet corners are tucked away.
Attend the safety drill or muster. It’s mandatory and takes five minutes, and then you're free.
Shore excursions: make the most of every port but don't overdo it!
Exploring new destinations is one of the best things about cruising.
Research the ports ahead of time. A little prep goes a long way.
Book the cruise line’s excursions early if there’s something you absolutely must do, they will usually offer discounts for pre-booking.
Or consider DIY options or independent tours for more flexibility and often better pricing.
Keep an eye on the time. The ship will not wait if you’re late back from an independent excursion. You don't want the embarassment of being a port runner!
Pack light for port days with water, sun cream, wallet and comfy shoes.
Remember, it’s not about cramming in as much as possible. It’s about enjoying where you are. Read my guide to savvy port days and you won't go wrong.
Ready to set sail?
Your first cruise is going to be exciting, memorable and probably the start of a brand new obsession. With a bit of preparation, smart packing and a relaxed mindset, you’ll be gliding around that ship like you’ve been cruising for years.
Enjoy every moment, take lots of photos and get ready to make memories that last long after you’ve stepped back on land.
Bon voyage!
