What should I wear on a cruise?

Packing for a cruise is one of my favourite pre‑holiday rituals - part excitement, part panic, and part “do I really need seven pairs of shoes for a week?” (The answer is usually yes.) But if you’re new to cruising, or just want a bit of reassurance, here’s a simple guide to what actually works at sea.

This is all based on my own experience, from sunny sailings to chilly February sea days - and the outfits that made me feel comfortable, confident, and occasionally a little fancier than I probably needed to be. However, I am a guy, so some of my tips are based on research, I can't lie! Let’s dive in.

🌞 Daytime: Relaxed and Comfortable

Daytime on a cruise is as laid‑back as it gets. You’re wandering around the ship, relaxing by the pool, popping into the buffet… comfort is key.

Great options include:

  • Shorts or t‑shirts

  • Vest tops are great on deck, but be mindful in the dining room

  • Sundresses, playsuits, or linen sets

  • Swimwear (pack more than you think you'll need!)

  • Light cover‑ups for going between pool and indoors

A good pair of sunglasses makes everything feel more put‑together, even after a late night. And if you like things that feel a little more “premium”, linen and light neutral colours always look effortless.

👟 Shoes: Practical First, Cute Second

Cruise ships are huge. You’ll walk more than you expect, so pack:

  • Comfortable trainers or sandals

  • Slides or flip‑flops for pool days

  • A smarter pair for dinner

I’ve learned over the years that it’s better to bring shoes you know you can walk in, rather than the pair that will “probably be fine”. They won't be.

🌅 Evening Wear: Smart Casual Most Nights

Once the sun goes down, ships take on a slightly dressier feel. Nothing too formal most evenings, just polished and relaxed.

Think:

  • Dresses, skirts, jumpsuits

  • Smart trousers or chinos

  • Shirts, polos, nice tops

  • A jacket or blazer if you want to elevate things a bit

Some people like to go extra glam, and that’s perfectly normal on a cruise. Others keep it simple. Either way works, and if you're making the most of your drinks package, you won't care after a few cheeky cocktails!

✨ Formal Nights: A Chance to Dress Up

Most cruise lines still have at least one formal or “dress to impress” night, and they’re great fun if you enjoy the moment.

For formal night, you’ll see:

  • Evening dresses

  • Cocktail dresses

  • Smart suits

  • Tuxedos (optional, not required!)

  • A smart pair of shoes or heels

You don’t need to go over the top unless you want to. Wear something that makes you feel good, and that you can sit, walk, and eat comfortably in, because you’ll be doing plenty of all three. And if you like the finer things, this is a good chance to bring them out… especially if you found them in a sale!

🌬 Deck Wear: Pack a Layer

Even in warm climates, the wind at sea can catch you off guard. A lightweight jacket, hoodie, or cardigan will be your best friend on breezy evenings or while watching sail‑away.

👜 Bags and Accessories

A few simple pieces are all you need:

  • A crossbody bag for evenings

  • A tote or beach bag for the day

  • Jewellery or accessories that add a bit of sparkle

Nothing too fussy, just things that make outfits feel finished.

🎭 Theme Nights

Some cruises include theme nights like tropical, 80s, or all‑white evenings. They’re entirely optional, but they do add a bit of fun. If you enjoy joining in, pack one or two themed outfits that don’t take up much space.

✔️ Final Packing Tips

  • Layers matter! Indoor areas can feel cooler due to air‑con.

  • Bring something comfortable for the gym or spa if you plan to visit.

  • A spray bottle of crease releaser could be a life saver if there's no launderette on board

  • And for formal nights, choose outfits that photograph well. Those photos have a long shelf life!

So, what should you wear on a cruise?

Whatever makes you feel comfortable, confident, and ready to enjoy yourself. Cruises are wonderfully varied, and there’s room for every style, whether you’re going full glamour, keeping things simple, or doing a bit of both depending on the day.

And remember: you don’t need to spend a fortune to look the part. A few thoughtful choices (and maybe a good bargain or two) go a very long way at sea.
