If you’ve ever stepped into your cruise cabin, put your bags down and immediately wondered what a little extra space, a balcony or even a suite might feel like, you’re not alone. Cabin upgrades are one of the most tempting parts of cruising. So can you upgrade your cabin on a cruise? The good news is that yes, you can upgrade your cabin, often more easily than you’d think.

Whether you’re dreaming of more room, a better view or simply the joy of swanning around in a nicer space, there are two main ways to upgrade. You can place a bid through the cruise line’s upgrade programme, or you can contact the cruise line or your travel agent directly for a paid upgrade.

Let’s walk through the options so you can choose the one that suits your style, your budget and your patience levels.

Upgrade bidding programmes: a little like an auction, but friendlier

Most major cruise lines now run upgrade bidding systems. You’ll usually get an email or see a notification in the app inviting you to bid on higher cabin categories. The idea is simple. You pick how much you’re willing to pay and, if your offer is accepted, you get upgraded.

These systems keep things flexible. You choose what you’re comfortable with, and there’s no pressure. You’re not guaranteed an upgrade, but if you’re lucky you can end up in a much nicer cabin for a fraction of the full price.

Just make sure you check the pricing before you bid, you don't want to pay over the odds.

A few things to know:

  • You only pay if your bid is accepted

  • You can bid on multiple cabin types

  • There’s usually a minimum and maximum bid range

  • Acceptance often depends on how full the sailing is

  • If successful, your upgrade is often final, so if you don’t like the cabin location, sometimes it’s tough luck

If you enjoy the thrill of maybe getting a bargain, this is a fun route to try.

A nice tip, if you’re anything like me, you’ll be tempted to bid the minimum – which is actually very common, try bidding a little bit higher than the minimum for a higher chance of winning!

Direct paid upgrades: simple, straightforward and often overlooked

If bidding isn’t your thing, you can go the traditional route. Contact the cruise line or your travel agent and simply ask about the cost of upgrading. Prices vary depending on how full the ship is and how close you are to sailing, but it’s always worth asking.

Sometimes you’ll find that the official upgrade price is very reasonable, especially if the ship isn’t sailing at full capacity. Other times it might make your eyes water a little. Either way, a quick call or message can give you clarity.

Travel agents can sometimes access special rates or promotions that don’t appear online, so if you booked through one, use them. That’s what they’re there for.

Which option is best?

Both can work brilliantly, depending on what you want.

Choose bidding if you:

  • Love the possibility of a great deal

  • Don’t mind not knowing for sure

  • Are flexible about which cabin you get

Choose a direct upgrade if you:

  • Want confirmation immediately

  • Need a specific cabin type or location

  • Prefer everything organised and clear

There’s no right answer. Some people bid every time and get amazing results. Others prefer to pay a set amount and lock everything in.

A few extra tips

  • If you really want an upgrade, check availability regularly. Prices move.

  • If you want the best chance of a great deal, look at quiet seasons or less full sailings.

  • If you’d be devastated not to get the cabin you want, don’t rely on the bidding system.

Final thoughts

Cabin upgrades are one my favourite little thrills in cruising. Whether you go for a bidding programme or a direct paid upgrade, it’s an easy way to elevate your holiday and enjoy a touch more space and comfort.

You don’t have to be sailing in a suite to feel special. But if you can upgrade for the right price, it’s a lovely treat and worth exploring. And you never know, the cruise gods might just smile on you and bump you up for far less than you expected. Also, don't be disheartened if you don't win an upgrade auction, there are still plenty if ways to make your cruise special, and a great place to start is the spa! And they're even better than you think!
