Cruise ship spas and gyms are better than you think

Cruise ships are famous for amazing food, great entertainment and the kind of sunsets that make you consider moving onboard permanently (or maybe that’s just me?). But one thing people often overlook is just how good the gyms and spas are. Cruise ship spas and gyms are better than you think!
Whether you're someone who loves to work up a sweat before breakfast or someone who considers “relaxing in a warm room” a sport, there is something onboard for you.
And yes, you can absolutely be both. I have been known to look at the gym on embarkation day, nod approvingly, and then stroll directly into the spa.
The Gyms: Surprisingly Impressive
If you imagine a tiny room with a single treadmill from 1997, think again. Cruise ship gyms are usually big, modern and packed with equipment.
You can expect:
Cardio machines with ocean views
Free weights and resistance machines
Stretching areas
Fitness classes like yoga, spin or Pilates
Personal training sessions
The best part is the view. There is something very satisfying about walking on a treadmill while sailing into a new port. It almost makes you forget you’re exercising. Almost.
If you like to stay active, mornings are usually quieter. And if you are more of a casual gym visitor, popping in once or twice still feels pretty good. You did something. That counts. So does taking the stairs to the buffet by the way. Never feel guilty on a cruise.

The Spas: Your Floating Retreat
Cruise ship spas are a different world. Quiet, warm, relaxing and beautifully designed. A proper little escape from the bustle of the ship.
Most spas offer:
Massages
Facials
Body treatments
Couples treatments
Hair and nail services
Medispa options on some lines
The massage rooms are often right by big windows, so you might be lying there listening to soft music while watching the sea drift by. If relaxation had a postcard, it would look like this.
Thermal Suites: The Hidden Gem
If you do nothing else at the spa, try the thermal suite. They vary by ship, but they usually include things like:
Saunas
Steam rooms
Heated loungers
Hydrotherapy pools
Experience showers
Ice rooms if you’re feeling brave
They are bliss on sea days and a brilliant place to relax after a busy morning exploring a port. The thermal suites on P&O Iona and MSC Virtuosa are seriously impressive. They rival some of the better day spas I’ve been to. Well worth a visit, and if you would prefer them to be a bit quiter, port days are a great option as most people will be off the ship exploring.
Why You Should Visit on Embarkation Day
One of the best tips I give people is to visit the spa on embarkation day. They often run tours so you can see all the facilities before they get busy. And more importantly, they sometimes offer really good deals on treatments or thermal suite passes.
Even if you’re not planning to book anything, it’s worth walking around and seeing what’s available. At the very least, the thermal suite might tempt you if you’re at a loose end…
Haircuts, Grooming and Everything In Between
Need a trim before formal night? Fancy getting your nails done? Want your fringe to behave for the photos? Cruise ship salons offer all the usual services, and a few extras too.
It’s especially handy on longer cruises, or if you’ve just realised you forgot to pack something essential for looking vaguely presentable. Treat yourself!
Final Thoughts
Gyms and spas on cruise ships are so much better than most people expect. Whether you want to stay active, unwind completely or do a bit of both, there is always something to help you feel your best. From ocean view treadmills to heavenly thermal suites, it’s easy to find a moment of calm, comfort or a little pampering.
And if you’re curious, head to the spa as soon as you board. A quick tour, a few questions and you might discover the perfect way to spend a sea day, possibly with a lovely little discount too.
